Probably the first time i have posted a song even before the release of the movie or even the entire album. Such is the excitement generated by this song. After a long time A R Rahman has come up with such a soothing melody which tugs at your heart. It seems he always has his best reserved for Mani Ratnam. Don't know if the album will have better songs than this, but this sure has cranked up the expectations. An amazing launch pad for two debut actors too. And to note that this is just the unplugged version of the song with the original under wraps still. Vairamuthu as always at his usual elegant poetic self

Kya Hai Mohabbat (with meaning)- Ek Dheewana Tha

The best music of A R Rahman according to me is his initial period in Tamil cinema. And the music he delivers in Hindi and English movies is not much upto those levels. Jodha Akbar was one exception to that. Even in this latest hindi movie he has used the same tunes from Vinaithandi varuvaya. One additional song is different from the original. This particular song now seems to be best pick of the album. Javed Akthar yet again plays his magic and tells one how confusing and pure love is. And hearing a song in ARR voice after a long time with such a tune is just the best one can ask for. ARR has the knack of choosing the right song to sing for himslef every time he does it.

Lyrics of Nalla Nanban - Nanban

The music of Nanban was always an expected one for the main reason that Harris Jeyaraj will give one a melody treat. Even though the songs sound familiar in all his films they still go on be hits. The song "Asku Laksa" with the word 'love' in 16 languages is such a rage which can easily be said as the most popular song of the album. This particular song "Nalla Nanban" has some soul stirring simple melody with the flute and piano enhancing it multifold. The lyrics of the song is the main thing which brings out tears to the viewer. It conveys the cry and the pain of losing a friend and the sacrifice one is willing to make for a friend. Hats off to the lyricist for such wonderful lyrics. Surely a song which would be high up in my list of new songs.

Pirai Thedum from Mayakkam Enna

One of the best movies to come out in recent films. The films borders on emotions which Selvaraghavan is a master at. Though not his best this movie has a lot to offer for the non-commercial, non-mass movie lover. Danush and Richa are the movie and they carry the movie amazingly on their shoulders. Richa does need a mention here for one can never say her as a new comer after seeing the movie. GV's background does leave one attracted on the movie's proceedings. Though other songs like "oda oda" and "kadhal en kadhal" are more popular, this songs with its breezy lyrics and soft tones does catch up as you listen on loop. Projecting saindhavi's voice was a big plus and GV's echoed voice does make the song breezy. A definite addition to good melodies for the year.

Yamma Yamma from Ezhayam Arivu (7am Arivu)

Harris has come up with another album which was much expected since it was his second film with Muragadoss and Surya. To be frank this album is a huge let down as almost all of the tunes are from his old songs. This particular pathos song sung by my all time fav SPB has amazing lyrics will be a sure shot hit overriding the fact that this seems similar to "Anjala Anjala" - albeit a slower version. A same kind of feel with lyrics song is present in "Mayakkam Enna" released about the same time, but SPB's singing is breezy and soft compared to ruff and off beat singing by danush and selvaraghavan. The female humming at the background at places is cleverly placed and adds more softness to the song. This one song will stay in my heart for a long time to come.

This album had gone unnoticed for quite a long while. Nor did the movie become known neither did the music. All these changed when the movie bagged 3 national awards. With much curiosity saw the movie and the actress saranya ponvannan carried the movie right from the start to the end. The album has quite a few surprises to offer especially this song with awesome lyrics by Vairamuthu which fetched him his 6th national award. Singer Vijay Prakash seems to be climbing up the chart with each and every song his gets and it seems he will be soon seen in every music album that comes out. First time music director N.R. Rahnanthan does a commendable job in this album. May more of his future albums get noticed. Unni Menon's second version of the same song ought to be mentioned in this space too.
